Happy THURS... DAY

I’m not calling it Valentine’s Day. I am calling February 14th 2008 exactly what it is… it’s Thursday.

Personally, I feel that Valentine’s Day is just another pointless holiday in which big businesses get to profit off of. Businesses like The Body Shop, Zales, Victoria’s Secret, Hallmark, etc. all corner the market for this “celebration of love,” and use people’s good intentions in order to make a sale.

If you are attached, you have to get or do something for your significant other. Don’t you feel that pressure? I think the stress of finding a gift for Valentine’s Day has actually made people forget about what really matters. In fact, I’m noticing more and more that if you don’t do something extravagant or out-of-the-ordinary then you are looked down upon by the other person. It is just human nature. When a person expects something and doesn’t get it, they are let down.

If you’re single today… well, sucks for you. You’re alone. You’re all by yourself. While all friends are getting flowers, or getting ready for a dinner date, your home eating chocolate out of that stupid heart box you secretly bought for yourself. It is pathetic.

Humanity has forgotten about what is truly important. Instead of buying gifts, or going out to eat, why don’t we all just take ten steps back and look at what we are doing in third person? Why do we need a special holiday in order to show one another how much we care? Shouldn’t we be doing that all year long? Is society that cold, that one special day a year has to be planned in order for people to prove they love each other?

Furthermore, why do we have to buy gifts, or flowers, or chocolate, whatever? Why can’t we just… chill? If society just chilled, and stopped thinking about the holiday for the person, versus thinking about the person on the holiday, the holiday itself would take a back seat and February 14th would be better for everyone (whether you’re single or alone).

Let me just note: I am not just some angry, who just doesn’t have a valentine. I honestly feel that if the general public focused more everyday on making one another feel special, there would be no reason for this holiday.

If we all do the right thing, we won’t have to congratulate ourselves for it once a year. This way, the actual celebration of Valentines Day would become obsolete, and all marriages and relationships everywhere would be a happy one’s.
